The Christmas Gift - Giving Retirement Calculator

Oh goody, another tie! Was that dad's third for the day? Maybe mom is waiting for her third scarf?

Christmas. Hanukkah. Kwanzaa. What on earth do you buy for somebody that has everything? Particularly active seniors.

Mom and Dad appreciate gifts from kids. Our family's favorite kid, gift story is about uncle Frank who grew up in the Depression. One fall day he asked his Mom what she wanted for Christmas. She told him to "Give me anything you like." I'm told that his Mom loved that football.

Grown up kids have a harder task. They are short on time. And likely, short on ideas.

Meanwhile, mom and dad are meeting new challenges of their very own. Retirement may be looming. What holiday gift do you pick that will work for active seniors on the brink of retirement? Is there such a thing as a retirement calculator for gift giving? Sure. Start with research so you make a wise choice of investment. Be sure your investment will grow over time. If you can, pick one that will cherished in the long haul.

Research. You can't decide at the last minute. Pay attention all year around. Last summer a workman bent the step of Mom's stepstool that the previous workman had cracked. If you didn't make a note of that when it happened, you may lose an opportunity at shopping time.

Growth potential. My grandson absolutely loves the zoo. To him heaven is someplace hidden in the unseen kingdom down there between the spiders and the bats. If grandma and grandpa had a membership at the zoo, they would reap laughter, surprise, and family bonds-all good returns on the investment.

Legacy. Note the highlights with pictures. Our family invests in one-of-a-kind picture books of special events. A zoo picture book would be cherished by at least three generations: grandparents, parents, and grandchildren-now and later.

By paying attention and investing in areas with meaningful and long lasting returns, you will have a gift-giving time worth remembering. Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah. Happy Kwanzaa.

A Day in the Retiree's Life Rested

The pounding you hear is 60-years worth of kitchen flooring being pulled up by the roots in the room next to this computer. Noisily. It turns out that retirement isn't all cruises, grandkids, golf, and other fun stuff. This noisy stuff is called daily living. We didn't cover that at the retirement party!

Another big daily living retirement surprise to me was rest.

Since retirement I've been greeted with, "You sure look rested." My wife told me to expect that to happen. It happened to all her retired friends when they came back for lunch. It happened to her after retirement. It took me a while to figure out how I got rested.

The secret is sleep

The answer was quite simple. I sleep more. Think about it. If you can recover a fraction of your work-related commute time or work time itself and devote that to sleep, you can actually get rested. Sure enough, when I went back and looked at my daily log of sleep, I was averaging 15 to 20 minutes more a day.

I did some research and came up with some rules so that other retirees can achieve the coveted "You sure look rested" award:

Go to bed and get up at the same time each day

New retirees want to play and/or sleep in. I get it. Sooner or later, however, you want to establish a new, after retirement normal. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Maybe go to bed slightly earlier? Maybe stay in bed a little longer? The goal is to sleep a little bit longer. Your body responds positively to regularity so no matter how long you sleep, do it at the same time every day.

Find something to do in the morning

If you're like my friend Marcia who tends to stay in her jammies all day unless she has something to do, you need to find some good reason to get out of bed. Part-time employment? Golf? Volunteering?

Be active

Exercise is good, regular morning activity for a variety of reasons. After exercise your body continues to burn calories at a higher rate than without exercise. Good idea to get that started early in the day. Early morning or not, a higher level of activity helps you rest better.

Get a little more sleep. Be a little more active. And soon your friends will say, "My! You look rested."

Inertia Pain Means Starting Again

Halleluiah, my knee doesn't hurt as much today. Now I need to get a higher level of activity back into my life. Ten days ago this retired guy was exercising six days a week. One too many karate kicks in that water aerobics class and bam! My knee took a turn for the worse. Literally.

I'm facing what everyone faces at some point: Inertia.

Remember inertia? An object in motion tends to stay that way. An object at rest? Well. An object at rest is a goner. Once you've lost your ability to move, it's an uphill struggle to get started again. Injury is the first way to become inert.

I'm also an expert at the second kind: lifestyle choice. I spent my life at rest. No regular exercise. Not much activity. It was only three years before retirement that I began climbing out of that pit.

Backsliding is a third cause of inertia. I'm referring to people who achieved a relatively high level of activity but gradually let that activity slip away. With backsliding a layer of embarrassment or shame might well be added to the recovery because you used to be able. You may not want to admit that fact.

The origin of word inertia is the Latin word iners, meaning idle or sluggish. Oh yeah. Got that down pat. I have the tee shirts. I know I've been idle, but feeling like you couldn't win a race with a slug? Sluggish describes the condition as well the feeling!

Luckily I know how to become active again. I've got a plan:

Start somewhere. When injured I swap lower level classes for highly active ones.

Keep at it. You'll be worse off if you quit.

Pay attention to your body. Don't let impatience override what your body is telling you. If you are sore, go slower or don't do so much in a single session.

Don't do too much. Build up gradually. You don't want a new injury to compound the problem.

Don't do too little. You have to push yourself. After I get going with the slow classes, I'll start adding faster ones gradually.

Check with a doctor. If pain continues or you can't put weight on it, you should seek medical help.

If you don't already have a personal trainer, getting over inertia is a great time to engage one. The good personal trainer can help you carefully assess your current ability and plan next steps for improvement. She/he can also keep you at a pace that is a challenge-fit for you.

Infirmity and incapacity are two of the basic fears we have about our health in retirement. Overcoming inertia is a great recipe for avoiding these.

Home Is Where The Care Can Be

Senior citizens who do not have their own home end up in a retirement home being cared for by doctors and nurses. However, for some people that still have a house, there is a way that they can still get the care they need without having to move out of their house. Home care is an option that millions of senior citizens use to have the care they need, but can still have their own space.

Older People Have Their Pride and Dignity Too

No one wants to admit they are getting so old that they are having problems keeping up with things, but the last thing people want to talk about having to move into a retirement community. However, with home care, nurses are paid a salary to drive around and visit senior citizens on all sides of town to check on their health, make sure they take their medicine, and meet with family members. Here is more information on the benefits of having a medical professional come to a home to not only check on their patients but also make sure they are in good spirits:

People can feel more independent: It can be hard for older people to give up their independence and have to rely on everyone to do things for them.Reduces the chance of an older person getting sick: When people are on their own community, one little illness can mean that it spreads to every single person in the facility. If anyone is already in poor health, constantly getting sick is not going to help them. In order to keep healthier, home care is often preferred because the less exposure to people with compromised immune systems have to germs and bacteria, the better they will be.A healthier overall environment: No matter how many nice perosons are in a facility, some people are just not happy living somewhere that is not their home. If they are not happy about being in a facility, then their mental health is going to be greatly affected. People are going to be miserable, and their unhappiness can be so great that they might start to withdraw socially, stop eating, and do not even come out of their own rooms. Even though people may be in a very good facility, some of them are just not happy not being able to live in their own house.

A home care company has services available for anyone who are over a certain age and are in failing health. With this services they offer, older people do not have to worry about being forced out of their home and being put into a nursing home or retirement home. Nursing homes can be full of nice people, but they all carry germs that can make people constantly sick. As people get older, they tend to be in poor health, and living in a retirement community just does not suit some people. A nurse can come to people's homes, take care of them, and they can get the same kind of medical care they would in a nursing home.

The holidays are a time for family. Traveling to loved ones and family members, building fires, cozying up, sharing stories, decorating and eating are all parts of a family-oriented and loving holiday image. More so than other family members, the elderly appreciate the holidays and passionately prepare for their arrival. For many seniors, this is the highlight of their year as children, grandchildren and other loved ones surround them all at once.

For many seniors, preparations for the holidays are a very healthy way of getting their minds and bodies into action, which studies say improve their livelihoods, cognitive function and overall quality of life. According to the Alliance for Aging Research, both mental and physical stimulation can keep brains healthy and prevent or lessen cognitive decline as the aging process occurs. Staying mentally active with practical activities combined with gentle physical exercise are an effective way to keep elderly loved ones sharp and fit.

Holiday preparations require both physical and mental activity. Grocery shopping, cleaning, finding a Christmas tree or other holiday decorations, trimming the house with holiday-themed ornaments and preparing food are all appropriate activities for seniors during this time of year. Sometimes, however, these activities are simply too strenuous for seniors and require much more assistance than loved ones or family members can provide. Senior care providers specialized in a variety of elderly services are capable of assisting during this very important time of year.

As the number of seniors who choose to stay at home living independent lives continues to grow, in-home care has become a popular, reliable and effective solution to keeping elderly clients safe and content. Home care agencies can provide elderly care at home to those seniors with physical injuries or mental disabilities like dementia. Those seniors who are unable to complete certain daily activities alone like shopping or decorating are perfect candidates for private in home care. Under these circumstances, caregivers assist seniors in their own homes with daily activities.

While home caregivers can provide assistance in bathing, dressing, and providing meals to elderly clients, they are also capable of doing much more. Maintaining family scrapbooks, writing and mailing holiday cards, preparing grocery lists, planning parties, cleaning and organizing as well as escorting senior clients on visits with family and friends are all non-medical related activities caregivers can do with the elderly. In many ways, caregivers can assure your beloved senior is capable of still having safe and happy holidays.

Peace of mind for family members as well as seniors is a priceless gift only a caregiver can give. Affordable solutions are available as caregivers can provide services on an hourly to live-in basis. When caregivers are properly licensed, bonded, insured and trained, they are capable of providing what family members wish they could themselves. In many ways, the right caregiver can become part of a family as the services they provide are personal and emotional, critical to maintaining your elderly loved one's quality of life.

Planning For Payment of Nursing Homes in California

If you're a California resident and you want to prepare for the eventuality of requiring nursing care, one of the things you'd have to take care of is Medi-Cal planning. This helps assure you of being able to afford medical assistance when the need arises. Medi-Cal planning can be a bit complicated and you may want to seek help from a qualified attorney. However, it still pays to know the basics of Medi-Cal planning.

Obtaining Eligibility for Medi-Cal to Pay for Nursing Homes in California

Among the things that confuse a lot of individuals is the question of how much money you're allowed to have in order to qualify for Medi-Cal coverage. Most people think they aren't allowed to have any assets at all if they want to obtain Medi-Cal benefits. The truth is that existing laws do allow you to have assets; you simply need to rearrange them to qualify for Medi-Cal. Although you do have to 'spend down', that doesn't mean you have to reach poverty level. If you're married, your spouse is generally allowed to keep a maximum of $104,400 in resources after spending down.

A good way to spend down and still qualify for Medi-Cal coverage is to use the amount in excess of what's allowable on home improvement. Your home is exempt from eligibility considerations, which means the value of the house and any amount you spend on improving it can't be used in determining your eligibility for coverage. Remember, though, that this exemption can change at any time so you'll have to review the laws governing Medi-Cal from time to time to make sure you keep your eligibility.

Other Considerations for Medi-Cal Payment of Nursing Homes in California

If you do qualify for Medi-Cal, you shouldn't automatically think everything is taken care of in terms of the cost of nursing care. Take note that if your monthly income reaches a certain bracket, you'll be required to provide a share of cost (SOC). This means you'll have to shell out a certain amount before Medi-Cal starts to pay for the care services you avail of.

Let's say, for example, that you have a family of four and a monthly income of $3,000. The Maintenance Need Level (MNL) for a family of four is fixed at $1,100. Now, suppose you have total allowable deductions of $600. The MNL and allowable deductions will be subtracted from your income and what's left will be deemed your SOC, in this case, $1,300. Unless your medical expenses exceed $1,300, therefore, Medi-Cal won't pay anything.

There are indeed a lot of issues you need to address when you're preparing for the time when you'll need care from any of the nursing homes in California. It's a good idea to face these issues now when you still have time to plan and weigh all of your options carefully. If you wait until the need is already there, you could very easily fall into the trap of making rushed decisions.

An additional thing to view is discovering what adaptations have already been developed to the structure to help people with constrained capability to move. Be sure you can find handles and handlebars on the surfaces and exterior doors to help individuals stabilise themselves. Are the faucets in the bathroom user-friendly? What about pull cords to have the care of a health care worker? Unexpected emergency cords like this require to be in easy reach plus in every room.

The next thing to consider is if you think the team members will take proper care of your own senior family member. Silver Lining in Senior Home Care Services

Post retirement period is about enjoying the rest of life to the fullest. The anxieties and tensions associated with the job responsibilities are over, and now it's a joyous life that the retired individual deserves. Sounds great, but a slight twist in the tale is there. The stressful life lived earlier has left no attempts unattended to damage the physiological system, and the older age has only contributed a bit more to invite frequent illness. Elder care specialists will obviously be there to provide requisite medical attention, but what about the bills to be paid? Considering the counterbalancing factors of ever increasing expenses to be shouldered to afford medical treatment and greater life expectancy, it's becoming a cliffhanger for an individual to strike a balance between these two. In fact, arrangement of funds isn't going to be enough; there should be measures to safeguard the issue of asset preservation for seniors as well to secure future for the dependents and other acquaintances.

Why such a planning to protect assets is becoming crucial?

People enrolled into senior home care programs designed by insurance service providers expect the policy issuing company to shoulder all the expenses associated with the medical treatment. To some extent, it is true, but with few serious loopholes. They will do so, subject to preexisting illness parameters and treatment period not exceeding a stipulated duration. Of course, medical emergencies aren't supposed to be bound by such restrictions, and in case long term treatment is prescribed, such entities simply shrug off the responsibility. In such an unfortunate case, assets owned by the elder person are used up, in order to arrange funds to pay medical bills and other related expenses. Soon they end up making wrong decisions regarding asset liquation, only to doom the future and invite uncertainties. Luckily, a senior care consulting company does have the ability to bridge that gap, thanks to its productive solutions and expert suggestions. Professionals belonging to such organizations chalk out well thought out plans tailored to cater the issue of asset preservation for seniors.

Few productive solutions

Not all the senior people have bought long term insurance policies to afford elder care specialists, and are driven by the motive to spend up their hard earned savings. Worst case, they even mortgage the physical assets. Lack of knowledge is main reason behind this step, and cases aren't rare where they were told that Medicaid facilities are reserved for low income group people only. That's not true at all; even the moderate income group can cash on the benefits served by this policy, subject to strategic restructuring of the finance available.

Growing Old - There's NO place like home

Growing old - There NO place like home!

Mark Ronfeldt RN

"My husband loved my cooking, now that he's gone; I just open a can of soup. I don't feel like doing much anymore."

"It's getting harder to get up and down these stairs every day."

"We raised our family in this house. Where else can we go that will feel like home? I want to stay in my own home!"

These are very common issues of older people. They are also great concerns for the spouses and children of aging parents; says Gina Hilton: RN BSN WCC, Owner of FirstCall Home Care: a 12 year old Kansas City based home care company.

As your parents, grandparents, relatives or friends face changes to their health. They often rely on others for assistance in helping them make sometimes major and life changing decisions.

For most, allowing their loved ones to stay safely in their homes is a realistic alternative to assisted living or a skilled nursing facility. All of us are comfortable in familiar surroundings with the support of family, friends and healthcare providers, when there are changes in their lives. Knowing and understanding what is necessary to help them stay independent is the key to this transition. Often times all it takes is a little home modification: a grab bar in the shower, rearranging the furniture to make it easier to get around the house, a chair in the shower or a ramp to make it easier and safe to get out of the front door. Giving your loved one the control and independence that allows them to safely stay in their own home.

The question about what kind of 'outside' help might be necessary in making this transition occur will arise. "If we keep mom at home, what kind of help would she need?" Does she need help maintaining the house; doing laundry, preparing some meals and housekeeping? And/or does she have a medical condition that requires monitoring; Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure or High Blood Pressure? By knowing that these services are available to you can make this transition long lasting and successful.

Home health care and In-home services are an integral part of the healthcare system in the United States today. In the Kansas City area it costs $150-$170 a day for a semi private room in a nursing home; $1600 to $5400 per month in an assisted living facility in the area. A health aide coming into your loved one's home 3-4 hours a couple days a week is pretty economical in the Midwest, with rates at $17 to $25 per hour. Arrangements can be made for a licensed Skilled Nurse to visit your home regularly also. When there is a medical need for these services - they are a covered benefit under Medicare or private insurance. Home services are a benefit covered by the Medicaid program.

In-Home services providing assistance with meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry and errands, these basic service allow older and those with mental or physical disabilities to remain in their homes. This is a Medicaid covered benefit and can also be privately contracted with an agency.

Medicare and most insurance companies provide a home health benefit, which could send a Skilled Nurse out to her home to check Mom's blood pressure or monitor her heart and lungs 2-3 times a week. This benefit is for medical need; a recent hospitalization or long standing medical problem that provides a Skilled Nurse - All services under the direction of your own primary physician. There are a few basic requirements for this benefit: there must be a medical need for professional nursing services AND one must be homebound: in that it is difficult and requires great effort for one to leave their home. The Home Health benefit in most cases also covers Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy, also the services of a Social Worker.

Knowing what to do? Where to begin? And who can help understand what it available, is a major milestone in this journey. In most cases all it takes is a call to your local home care agency to help guide you in the right direction.

Health Care in Sri Lanka - a Comprehensive System

The island nation of Sri Lanka features a health care system that provides a comprehensive range of treatments and services. The country boasts a well-developed government sector as well as a productive private sector, which both provide effective health care options for the citizenry.

For decades, Sri Lanka has been committed to the principle of free-of-charge universal health care. Both the government as well as the private medical sphere have steadily expanded and developed their facilities and infrastructure so that the needs of citizens can be met adequately. Today, advanced facilities and state-of-the-art technologies are available to meet almost all medical requirements, major and minor. Major government hospitals offer a comprehensive range of facilities, from OPD facilities to emergency services. All staff of government hospitals are professionally qualified and trained so as to offer excellent services to patients. To obtain treatment for accidental injuries and incidents such as dog bites, the best option is to go directly to the accident service of a general hospital as they are equipped to handle emergencies of this nature.

The private health care sector is another excellent option with a number of outstanding private hospitals offering world-class facilities. Some of the best medical professionals who have acquired their medical qualifications at renowned international medical institutions work at these hospitals, which provide stellar treatment services to their clients. The charges of these hospitals are often much lesser than comparative treatments in developed nations. Patients who require the expertise of specialists have the option of "channelled" consultations at a private medical centre. Often, these medical professionals are highly qualified and yet the consultation charges are modest when compared with international standards.

Dentistry services are similarly available in government medical centres but many opt to obtain the services of private dental surgeons. Again, the charges are modest in comparison with international services. As you might expect in a South Asian nation, the indigenous Ayurvedic system of medicine is also practiced, and there are those who prefer to obtain the treatments of this system. With all of these options available, the health care system of Sri Lanka is geared to handle almost any medical requirement.

3 Factors to Check When Looking at Assisted Living in Fresno

Finding the right assisted living in Fresno for a senior family member can be a difficult one. Caring for an aging family member can throw the entire dynamics of a family off its course. You want to make sure that they have everything they need but are still able to maintain much of the dignity and self-respect they deserve. For the senior, it can be even more troubling, so the facility that you choose should be caring enough to take all of those factors into consideration. Here are a few things you should look at.

The Caregivers

There are many different types of assisted living facilities to choose from, and knowing exactly what needs must be met can help you to sift through the many options before you. Many of these places will offer all sorts of amenities and services to make your loved one comfortable. However, the most important detail that you can find from any facility is the quality of service. While you visit, observe how the staff interacts with the residents and with you. Observe the overall dynamics and their level of care. Some of these factors will not be readily apparent but you should be able to get a good grasp of the environment by observing some of the other residents. Do they appear happy and content; are they relaxed or are they nervous or agitated?

The Social Atmosphere

Try to find a location that has an active social atmosphere; where the residents will not have to be isolated in their room if they don't want to be. It is important for the residents to be able to continue to grow socially while they're there. Residents should feel safe and secure in their new home.

Cleanliness

A facility that does not maintain a good level of cleanliness is a hazard to the residents. Disease and infection could spread among a community that is already at a disadvantage. A facility that considers cleanliness a priority is making sure that their residents are kept safe from all sorts of environs.

Some seniors may need more than assisted living care. For those whose health requires around the clock medical supervision, these types of facilities are not a good choice. However, if your family member still has a level of independence and does not need a medical professional at their bedside 24/7, then these types of facilities may very well be the best choice for them. Finding the right assisted living in Fresno for your senior family member could actually add to their present quality of life.

Fall Activities for Seniors - Providing Stimulating, Fun and Healthy Activities for the Elderly

There are a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for the elderly during the autumn season to keep loved ones entertained, healthy and content. Elderly care can be a time-consuming and tricky endeavor as seniors move at slower paces, are oftentimes physically thwarted by health problems, injuries or disabilities and may also be experiencing rapid mental decline. Senior care should be focused not only on gently exercising the body but also exercising the mind. Playing games, cooking, telling stories, or reading the newspaper and discussing current events are all brain-healthy activities that can help seniors thrive mentally.

The fall is a perfect time to be outdoors taking advantage of beautiful, cooler weather. A light walk picking apples at an orchard, collecting leaves and withered flowers for a collage or visiting a farmer's market may be the perfect amount of physical activity needed for a senior. According to WebMD, a 2003 study examining the effects of physical activity on the brain showed proof through a series of patient MRIs that aerobic exercise can protect the brain from further mental decline and age-related damage. A walk with a senior, then, may not only be helping their bodies, but also improve their minds. Caregivers must keep in mind that even those seniors who are fit enough for these types of outdoor adventures are capable of sustaining new injuries. Certain precautions must be taken into consideration before going out to a pumpkin patch or taking a walk on a hiking trail. Caregivers should feel comfortable helping to lift or carrying an injured senior when venturing far from home or transportation.

Stimulating the brain through a variety of fun and interesting activities is also a very healthy activity for seniors. The World Alzheimer's Report of 2011 suggests that providing cognitive stimulation to those with various stages of dementia can improve and/or reduce decline in cognitive function. Playing word games, doing puzzles, listening to music and doing practical activities like gardening are all cognitively stimulating activities that improved seniors' psychological wellbeing, functional status and quality of life.

Despite the fact that these types of mental and physical activities greatly improve a senior's health and livelihood, not all family caregivers are capable of providing the time or opportunities for these activities on such a routine basis. Assisted living and in-home care services, however, can help with just these types of activities, leaving loved ones to rest assured while they work, take care of their families or other loved ones that seniors are getting the proper attention and care they need.

Those family members responsible for elderly members suffering from dementia or other age-related mental or physical problems may get to a stage where they feel they can no longer provide the necessary support their loved one needs. A variety of senior services including dementia and Alzheimer's care as well as home care assistance, senior living, long-term care, and other options are available to those caregivers who are ready to ask for help.
