Duties and Responsibilities of Home Caregivers

It is given that a good medical degree and background is needed to be considered as a qualified home care giver. You should be aware of the proper dosages of medicines and the repercussions if ever you have committed a mistake on it. You should be an expert in all types of first aides since you will never know when your patient will get worse than how she is as of now. But are these medical skills enough?

MAS Home Care knew for a fact that they are not, that is why their home care givers are notches higher than the plane home nurses and medical personnel. As how they are, their home care givers are far more encompassing than the normal ones, as they do not just take their job professionally but personally as well. They also touch the lives of their patients in terms of the psychological, emotional and social aspects of human lives.

To know if your resident health personnel are the best, here are the duties and responsibilities of home care givers, and someone who is good at that:

Must be caring

Even though you have all the medical knowledge in the world, if they do not care about their patient, then everything is set to be put into waste. Their sympathy towards their patient should be their main driving force and not just because their job requires them to do this and that. A warm heart can work better than a great mind.

Must be sensitive

Most of the long term care beneficiaries are the aged people. People who are set to take care of the old people need to be sensitive enough in their needs. Some of them are too old to reiterate the pains and difficulties they are feeling and some of them have already gone back to being childlike that they cannot clearly express what they want. A good care giver should know the needs of their patient before they say them, if they still can.

Must not be stagy

No matter how much gross it is, care givers are entitled to take care of the literal dirt of their patients. Good care givers must not be fidgety or reluctant to groom their patient everyday and clean their body wastes. After all, they would not be applying for this job if they are not well-oriented by the nature of their work.

Must make the patient feel accepted

Here is where the heart really falls in .Home Care givers should successfully fill the emotional gap between the patient and his legitimate family. It is not that they will completely steal their patients' harts from their family but they must know how to emotionally guide them as they are now on their later days, and emotionally stability is quite hard to maintain at this point in life.

It is indeed hard to find the right long care givers that will fill you face some times. But if you happen to find someone whose heart really belongs to helping, then you are getting it right.

Why Colorado Assisted Living Littleton And Denver For Elders With Memory Impairment Ailments?

When a senior member of your home gets diagnosed with a dementia related disorder such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, disorientation, memory loss, etc., it is definitely a sad moment for all the family members. In the present conditions in which only the elders remain at home most of the time during the day, leaving them alone in the house becomes a tough proposition. Even if the ailments are in early stages, such seniors usually find it difficult to carry on all their daily routine activities without some amount of assistance from others. The situation becomes graver as the disorder progresses and your loved ones become physically and mentally even weaker.

One good solution for such persons suffering from memory impairment problems is Colorado Assisted Living Littleton and Colorado Assisted Living Denver homes that offer accommodation, comfort, and solace to them. Before you admit your senior with dementia disorder in one of the Colorado Assisted Living homes located in Littleton, Denver, Centennial, Lakewood, Parker, and Sterling, you should initially make a honest assessment of the present physical and mental condition of the afflicted person. You should also analyze the specific needs of the elder related to physical, mental, lifestyle, and financial aspects when you admit your loved one in the assisted living homes.

It is also advisable to involve the senior during such assessment and analysis, so that your loved one also becomes mentally prepared to move to a home. All the family members should discuss this issue with the elder with positive and encouraging attitude, while allowing that person also to reveal his/her personal preferences during and after the move, which could be even very minor items like a favorite chair.

When you discuss the shifting of the elder to one of the Colorado Assisted Living Littleton, Colorado Assisted Living Denver, and other Colorado Assisted Living homes, you could openly enquire about the facilities in the homes, the daily activities, various memory care services that the homes offer, the fees for residency in the home, and any other extra fees for specific additional facilities. You could also go through a copy of the facility contract or resident agreement to understand the rules and regulations of the homes to ensure that your elder would be totally comfortable in one of the homes of Colorado Assisted Living Littleton and Colorado Assisted Living Denver.

Celebrating my Twenty Second Birthday With Elders

How much effort a mother, a father is giving to grow up their children, feed them, bring them to the place where they are standing at the moment? But how many of them remember the way their parents loved them, took care of them, nourished them.... Some don't even let them stay under their roofs and they start becoming so heartless that they send their parents to an elder's home and they barely visit them.

Fortunately there also some kind of people are alive in the middle of this cruel society, who are willing to help elderly in home care giving them a good care, supporting them, building their mental health and well-being, providing live in care work.

For whatever the reason, last weekend I felt spending my time with some lonely people sharing my love and care with them and chose my birthday as the desired day for that since I had my savings for that day with the hope of spending them for a huge party, but that doesn't make me feel better like the way I felt spending time with these lovely old people. I felt like I want to go find carer job, leaving everything behind, just to make these innocent people happy while keeping my soul serene.

The whole day on my birthday I spent with these old people who are just like my grandmother and grandfather. I listened to their life stories, what happened to their children and even to their love stories. But there was this old father who was sitting in a corner, talking to none and the in charge of the elder's home said that he barely eats and doesn't even take his medicine properly. So they have to give a special attention on him. I badly wanted to talk to him as I saw him suffering inside.

I went to him. "Hey, won't come to have lunch with us. Everyone is gone, only you and me left, aren't you hungry?". He smiled and looked away. He ignores talking to anyone. But I won't give up. I sat and start talking "You know what? I'm living with an illness since I was a kid. And I really don't know what would be going to happen to me. I might die young or I will be able to survive. This doesn't mean that I have to suffer every single second thinking about that and counting the days until I die". He looked at me like he's feeling bad about me. I said "No Papa, you don't have to be sorry for me. That's how my fate is or maybe it happens for a reason. But look at you. You already have lived enough time. You don't have to stay like this for no reason. You might have a grief inside you. There are lots of people out here. They all have similar snags just like yours. You can share your blues with them or with people like me who visit here. You have no time to waste dwelling in the past."

He held my hand and smiled, "Will you come to see me again? Let's go for lunch".

Sundowners Syndrome - What it is and How to Cope?

If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia, you may be familiar with Sundowners Syndrome. Sundowners syndrome is characterized by memory loss, confusion, agitation, or wandering during the evening hours when the sun is setting. It affects up to 20% of individuals with Alzheimers. Sundowners can also be seen in those with dementia and in otherwise healthy individuals who are experiencing a protracted hospital stay. Symptoms of Sundowners include rapid mood changes, anger or agitation, crying or fear, depression, restlessness, and stubbornness.

The cause of Sundowners is unknown, however, it may be triggered by a variety factors. If your loved one is in an assisted care facility, Sundowners may be triggered by end-of-day activity. During late afternoon shift changes, there tends to be more activity and this activity has been linked to the anxiety or confusion many with Sundowners experience.

At home care providers should be on the lookout for a variety of factors that can contribute to Sundowners including fatigue, low light and the change of seasons. Sundowners can be triggered by fatigue at the end of the day and lack of activity after dinner. Others with Sundowners are triggered by the low light during the evening hours. This period of low light, before interior lights are fully turned on, can increase shadows making even a familiar room seem suddenly unfamiliar. The onset of winter has been shown to increase agitation in those with Sundowners.

How can you help your loved one cope with Sundowners? Because the causes are unknown, treatments are not well established. There is no pill to take to make Sundowners more manageable. There are, however, things you can do to help your loved one cope.

Try establishing a regular routine. "Routines help the elderly feel safe by minimizing surprises and establishing relied up on activities," says Larry Meigs, President and CEO of Visiting Angels, one of the nation's leading at home care providers. According to Meigs, "A regular routine can help to reduce anxiety and confusion."

Plan your day carefully. In addition to having a regular routine, those with Sundowners benefit from participating in more vigorous activities in the morning. It is also important to avoid loading up the day with too many activities. Experts recommend no more than two activities in a day.

Keep an eye on your loved one's diet. There may be a correlation between the foods your loved one eats and the symptoms they exhibit. Avoiding caffeine and sugary foods in the later part of the day can help to keep Sundowners under control. Keeping a food diary can help to identify the foods that trigger symptoms.

Minimizing noise from the television, radio and other devices in the evening hours can help as well. It is often advised that evening visits from individuals outside the household be avoided to minimize your loved one's stress and anxiety.

Types of Elder Care Available Around Los Angeles, CA

Discovering an excellent elder care facility in Los Angeles, CA is a job lots of families must endure. Because so many "baby-boomers" are already retired or retiring, lots of people are in the process of searching for the very best elder care choice for their aging loved ones. When the time unfolds that you ought to find a senior living option for your senior cherished one, there routinely are 3 options you can choose. Your options are to send them to live in a nursing home or facility, you can attend to them yourself, or you can employ an in-home elder care giver. Here is a brief view of the "advantages and drawbacks" of these elder care options:

Elder Care in Los Angeles has emerged over the last few decades. So many nursing homes are currently known as assisted living facilities, and so many are supplied with more services than what previous nursing homes provided. However with a more extravagant facility comes a stiffer price point, and for so many middle-class homes, these forms of homes can be out of their reach financially. For that reason, if you can't afford it, your senior loved one will most likely be required to live in a more average elder care rest, where the care quality is adequate, but we understand that it may not be the standard of elder care you would desire for your loved one. Furthermore, traditional elder care in Los Angeles, CA can be quite costly over time and quickly burn through the resources of an average middle-class family.

If a family has a medical professional that's around to administer medication or care when needed, they may choose to provide elder care on their own. This choice of elder care in Los Angeles, CA is a great option regarding affordability, but of course there are cons that come with this selection too. First of all, being a caregiver for another loved one can be difficult since it adds strain on all relations. Sadly if this predicament may need to maintain for a long time, then it certainly can lead to burn-out.

If this is the elder care choice of your choosing, then employ a part-time in-home caregiver that caters occasional relief. Retirement Homes in various circumstances and at so many times can be a full-time job, and so many family who are completely qualified to do so, have households and full-time jobs of their own to tend to. In these forms of circumstances, it normally doesn't appear sensible to meet the added stresses and weight of elder care by yourself in Los Angeles, CA

In-home nursing help oftentimes caters the elder care required; your ageing loved one experiences the professional level of medical care required without leaving the comforts of their home. In essence you are obtaining a caregiver check in on them, or provide a much more thorough level of elder if needed. Currently one can live their life acknowledging their ageing loved one is safe and sound and in good company. A positive note to remember is, the cost of in-home elder care in Los Angeles is a lot less than an assisted living facility, so it will be a lot less difficult on the on the family wallet too.

How to Keep Seniors Living Independent And Safe In Their Homes

I am in my late 60's and once my kids saw articles about medical alert systems, they began recommending me to acquire one for myself. I think I am still young and standing firmly on my feet plus my husband lives with me and I am seldom alone. I did buy the standard medical alert system though for my mother who lives all alone. They are now in their 80s now, and even though they are energetic people, they have slipped more than once before.

As I am a senior myself, I absolutely understand the need of elderly people to spend their later years in their home and not at a home. And they have every right to do so, especially if they have no significant health problems. I used to worry about my parents and mother in law falling all the time. Not any more though. Since we got the medical alert system, me and my husband have confidence. And now we know it truly functions as my mother fell right after I left her one Sunday afternoon. She used the alert pendant to call for help and the response center answered in seconds. I wasn't more than 10 minutes from the house when I received the phone call and had to turnaround immediately. I am so thankful because I was not going to go back to her house until that Tuesday, and she could have been on the floor for 2 days! That is what I love about this system. The senior presses just one button and there comes help and support from different sides: response center operators, medical professionals, friends and family. I love it that I can offer this sense of security to my parents.

Even if your parents or grandparents have limited mobility, you do not have to worry. They do not need to access the phone in order to get help. Just pressing the button on their neck or wrist pendant will allow the response center operators to communicate with them through a voice to voice channel. The speakers and microphone of the main medical alert unit are very loud. This means that even if the elderly does not hear very well or can not speak very loud, operators will still be able to help them.

Before purchasing our medical alert system we did a fair amount of exploration both on and off line and we managed to discover a bargain. The standard unit we got comes with one central unit and you can order additional pendants if you need it. So we order a unit for my mom and received it in a couple of days and the shipping was free! It took less 5 minutes to set it up and I did it myself, and trust me, I am no tech-expert! It was very simple to explain to my mom how it works. You need help, push this button; if you think you need help, push this button. The service includes non emergency calls which is great piece of mind for her and my husband and me. Another great thing is that if there is a power outage, the device has a backup battery system for up to 44 hours.

With the medical alert system we selected we pay less than $25 per month and we can stop our contract at the end of any given month. I cannot see us doing that any time soon though!

Why Funeral Directors Are Essential in Funeral Planning?

Even though death is something that is inevitable, the last thing that most people will like to talk or think about is funeral planning. And when the time comes when a loved one passes on, the same people face serious problems when trying to plan and make other arrangements for the family. While this might not be the subject that you would like anyone to give you ideas about, it is important that you understand the various essentials involved when planning funerals in order to deal with death accordingly when it becomes a reality in your life.

When planning for funeral services, funeral directors play a major role in ensuring that the departed person is given a decent send off.

While there are many different kinds of send-offs, they all require the same things as far as legality and proper procedure. However, the way the family wants to grieve is up to them. There are those who choose to have intimate and small gatherings, there are people who want extravagant send-offs or parties and then there are those who can only afford a cremation.

The tasks of funeral directors

A funeral director is otherwise known as an undertaker or mortician. For one to become a mortician, they must undergo relevant college training and obtain the necessary qualifications. Funeral directors entirely control the planning of the funeral and even undertake the necessary funeral rites. The funeral director fulfills various functions such as body collection and facilitating transport of the deceased to the burial or cremation site. Other tasks performed by directors include removing the blood and inserting embalming fluid, offering cremation or burial services as per the preferences of the family and arrange and plan for the ceremony.

Handling special requests

If the family has any special request, they can as well approach the funeral director for the same to ensure that their departed family member is buried according to their wishes. For instance, the family might want that the deceased is dressed in a special outfit

or holding a specific item. All the many things that the family may want or need should be communicated to the funeral director. Also, when the family wishes to have the body arranged in a specific way in the coffin or casket, they should also inform the director. There are also some families that want certain cosmetic products or substances to be applied on the body of the deceased to enhance their appearance. Some even need specific ritual items to be utilized, as per their religion. All of these things are a part of the director's job, so experience really counts in this line of work.

Why you need professional funeral directors

While the family might be willing to undertake all the funeral planning by themselves, handling the many different issues involved can be quite hard, stressful and very time consuming. The whole process is much involved, making it more trying, especially at times like these. As such, it is practical to consider seeking the help of professional funeral directors as they are experienced with handling the grieving period in a beneficial way to the family. This will especially include taking care of the various legal requirements that come with organizing and conducting a funeral that might prove rather hectic to the family. Thankfully, due to their experience in funeral planning, undertakers or morticians can offer meaningful guidance that will be of much use to the grieving family. They provide a great comfort to the grieving family and ensures that the deceased is honored in a proper and respectful manner.

Affordable And Reliable Car Services For Seniors

As the largest generation in American history enters their golden years, the number of elderly drivers will triple over the next twenty years. Now, we're not saying that older motorists are more dangerous than other age groups...the number are! So don't blame us! The fact is that as we age our eyesight, hearing, and reaction time diminishes, making it harder for us to operate a motor vehicle. For obvious reasons, many seniors are reluctant to surrender their driving privileges, even when their capabilities decline.

The automobile has always been a literal and figurative symbol of independence America. In fact, getting ones license is considered a rite of passage for young people. But losing your license, well, that's a different story. Few people actually stop to think what that might mean to an elderly individual, to be deprived of a privilege they have enjoyed their entire adult lives. According to most senior drivers, it makes them feel like children.

With that said, motorists who are no longer able to operate an automobile should not be driving. In most cases, it is up to the family of that elderly driver to help them make the transition from driver to passenger, a transition that is made infinitely easier if the driver has access to a reliable car service for seniors.

How they can help

Believe it or not, most elderly drivers don't actually enjoy driving. They don't go out cruising or take road trips, as they might have when they were younger. But they do enjoy the independence that comes with knowing that they can run errands on their own. Although delicate, this is a fairly simple problem to solve. As long as the former driver has reliable transportation, they probably won't mind if it's them that's driving. They simply want to run their errands when they have to and be done with them.

Options

Fortunately, there are many options when it comes to car services for seniors. There are buses and taxi services and even personal drivers. There are also home health aides, who generally provide transportation services as part of their total care package. The choice of service really does depend on the customer.

Some folks find that they enjoy taking trips with other seniors on buses. Of course, these buses probably won't take them on personal errands. More often than not, they shuttle them to and fro popular public buildings, such as libraries, community centers, and post offices. But if they have to go to the market, the doctor, shopping, or to a residential address, an elderly person may have to hire a personal car service for seniors.

The costs

Although they are personal chauffeurs of sorts, drivers who operate car services for seniors are far more affordable than you might think. Most offer annual memberships and deep discounts for elder passengers. They are able to turn a profit because they have set appointments, unlike cab drivers who have to ride around looking for fares. This saves them time and helps their elderly transportation service company grow as they provide a vital service to the community.

In addition to in-home care, LifeCare Companions also provides transportation services for our clients. Whether you need to go shopping, to the doctor, or to a social event, our home-care aide will help get you where you have to go on time. Dementia Care Services for Senior Citizens

Some diseases are harder to diagnose than others. Common signs and symptoms may go unnoticed or even be explained away. Such is often the case with dementia, a disease that now affects over 5 million Americans. Because it strikes mostly elderly patients, the condition is often mistaken for memory loss associated with aging. But dementia is actually a brain disease for which forgetfulness is a symptom.

Most of us have heard of Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common form of dementia. However, there are several other types of the disorder, and patients can even suffer from more than one type of dementia. Doctors and researchers aren't exactly sure what causes the condition, but they do know that it is far more likely to affect the elderly, which is bad news for America.

Dementia care service costs are rising

Because we have an aging population and health care costs are rising, it is more expensive than ever to take care of a person who suffers from dementia, a disease with no known cure. What begins as simple forgetfulness will inevitably progress into a more debilitating disorder in time. A perfectly healthy elderly individual with dementia can go from forgetful to incapable of caring for themselves in only a few short years. This happens because certain areas of the brain are damaged by the disease, which can cause a whole host of problems, from impulse to motor control.

In addition to the human toll of the disease, dementia also hurts the economy. According to medical professionals, it takes three adults to care for one dementia patient, whether they're doctors, nurses, orderlies, or home health aides. In most cases, of course, the primary caregivers are relatives, since few families can afford the ever-rising costs of fulltime care.

There are now an estimated 15 million unpaid caregivers in America, and that number is projected to double by 2050, when the largest generation in the nation's history enters extreme old age. There are approximately 78 million baby boomers in America today, which will result in a doubling of the cases of dementia by 2050, if no cure is found.

Planning for dementia care service

A staggering one in every three senior dies with some form of dementia, according to a new report. Although Alzheimer's isn't always the direct cause of death, it does make it more difficult to treat other serious illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. In that way, it actually exacerbates aging and shortens the life spans of the people it affects. Not to mention the toll it takes on the family.

As we mentioned, most families cannot afford fulltime dementia care service. With that said, they should not attempt to care for a dementia sufferer all on their own. The patient must be watched 24/7/365. At any time of the day or night they could wander out of their home or apartment and get lost or injured. It truly is too much responsibility for any single person to take on, even if they are young and able bodied.

The good news is that dementia care services can be purchased a la carte, or as needed. If your loved one requires regular transportation to the hospital, a bus can pick them up. You can also arrange for a home health aide to come by several hours a day, while you are at work. That way, the responsibility of caring for you elderly parent or relative can be shared by several qualified professionals.

From personal health care services to transportation and meal preparation, LifeCare Companions provides compassionate in-home care for seniors that require dementia care services in the Palm Beach area. We can handle as little or as much of your dementia home care as you and your family needs. For more information on our services, please visit http://www.lifecarecompanions.com/

Positively Engaged Senior Home Care

The best senior home care understands that there are many considerations to keep in mind when providing assistance and companionship to elderly individuals in need of both medical and social stimulus. As adults age, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain the same level of involvement in beloved activities and hobbies due to physical limitations and changes in the social fabric around them. The best senior home care works to counter the inherent effects of aging in a positive and affirming manner because a fulfilling lifestyle should not dwell upon the negatives of what is missing or flawed, but on the positives of what remains and what can still be performed and enjoyed.

In a thriving suburban or city area, there are ample opportunities to positively engage seniors in their favorite activities and interests from within their own homes or from very close to those homes. Museums and festivals are best enjoyed with a companion and the best senior home care providers take that consideration into account when pairing qualified caregivers to active seniors. Excellent home healthcare with the additional benefit of positive and genuine social interaction is at the heart of all exceptional senior home assistance.

Because home health and wellness assistance does not require seniors to leave the comfort and familiarity of their loved and treasured homes, in-home care is the ideal approach to both long-term and short-term care. Long-term care, for individuals who suffer from chronic conditions or who just need a little extra help around the house to perform more physically demanding chores, such as laundry and housework, can foster a rewarding experience for both the senior receiving the care and the individual providing it. The best in-home care creates a relationship beyond that of a nurse and a patient. Caregivers strive to be a treasured part of any elderly adult's life and understand that positive relationships tend to benefit both parties.

Short-term assistance, such as that immediately following an illness or medical procedure, is no less of an opportunity for fulfilling interaction. Due to the constraints a recovery period can often place on mobility and other physical traits, short-term in-the-home caregivers face a unique set of circumstances to work with and those that thrive accept the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. By getting to know the seniors in their care, the best home caregivers can gracefully assist their charges in overcoming any obstacle.

Compare Long Term Care Insurance Plans - Group vs. Individual Policies

Due to the overwhelming number of people who will soon need long term care, having a long term care insurance policy is now considered as one of the fundamentals of a sound retirement and old age planning. For this reason, many employers now offer group LTC insurance as part of their benefits package. But are employees getting the best deal from group plans?

In their website, the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance stated that the notion that group insurance policies cost less than individual policies is generally not applicable in LTC insurance. In group policies, insurance companies consider group risks, and when group risk factors are greater than personal risk factors, the policy applicant could wind up paying more for a group policy than individual policy. This is why before buying, we must first compare long term care insurance costs.

When is a group plan a better deal?

If you have health issues, you can get a better deal from group plans. Group plans have less stringent underwriting, which means people who would otherwise be ineligible for coverage are most likely to qualify. People who are eligible for coverage but are charged with additional premiums because of their health issues can also benefit from a group plan.

When is an individual policy a better deal?

If you are in good health, you are most likely not to get a better deal from a group plan - an individual policy might be more appropriate. Because insuring you entails lower risks, most insurance companies would want you to sign up with them and to convince you, they would offer discounts that you can take advantage of such as the following:

Good Health Discounts - These are discounts given to insurance applicants who are in the best of health. Savings can be as much as 10% of premiums.

Spousal Discounts - These are discounts given to those who apply as couples. The reduction on premiums can be as much as 40%.

If you buy an individual policy, you could also take advantage of partnership policies which protect more of your assets in case you need to apply for Medicaid. This type of policy is only available for individual plans.

To ensure that you get the best value for your money, always compare long term care insurance rates. You can get a free long term care insurance quote at http://www.completelongtermcare.com.

Change In Personal HygieneForgotten Medicine DosesPiled Up Mail And Unkempt HouseShort Term Memory Loss Or Confusion

A decline in personal hygiene is an indication that something has changed with your mother or father, especially if this was always a priority for them. If you notice they have not showered or mom isn't wearing make-up or jewelry that she always did in the past, this may be a sign that things are changing.

Missed doses of medicine is a scary change in behavior. Many elderly people rely on certain medications to keep their vitals in safe range. Blood pressure medicine is dangerous to miss. If your parents are missing doses of medication it is time for it to be monitored.

Walking into your parents' home and seeing piled up mail, unclean bathrooms, and spoiled food in the refrigerator are indications that something is amiss. Anything that is a 180 degree difference in behavior is a warning signal. You need to be aware and be ready to take action so that your parent's health and safety are a priority every day.

Short term memory loss or confusion is an immediate alarm to needing in-home care. This is a vital time to making sure your parents are not alone for long periods of time. An in-home caregiver can provide that and give you peace of mind. Care on this level allows for medication monitoring, help with daily life and household chores. Most adult children still need to be at work during the day so they are not able to provide that level of care without assistance. And, most parents prefer to stay in their own home holding on to a bit of their independence. Superior in-home care allows this to happen and is the best of both worlds for the whole family.
